Up until the summer of 1991, Robyn Hewitt had a photographic memory and was an accomplished rider. Her father bought Robyn her first horse when she was two. "She rode from the time she could sit up, remembers Hewitt's mother Gail.

A car accident near Duntroon changed her life forever. The vehicle she was driving bounced off a gravel road that detoured around some construction, and rolled down a steep hill, turning over13 times before coming to rest against a tree. The accident crushed the vehicle, squashed Hewitt between the dash, and inflicted sever injuries including to her head.

It also wiped out Robyn's perfect memory, and she had to re-learn "pretty much everthing again." "I couldn't tie my shoes. I couldn't make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I couldn't follow a recipe for the longest time, said Hewitt, who has been trough years of continuing rehabititation.

She's come a long way but, still has difficulty remembering basic mathematical functions. "It's been a long struggle. Such determination," said Gail Hewitt, from the family home in Priceville. Horses and Hewitt's father have been instrumental in her recovery.

"It   was at a point when her rehabilitation had stalled, that George Hewitt stepped in to give it some new direction. He felt the stress of the therapy was slowing down her recovery. "The stress was making her injuries worse. I knew she always loved horses. You have to have something to make life worthwhile," said George Hewitt a veteran rider.

The biggest breakthough came, when he introduced his daughter to an easy going old bay mare. "The first week all I wanted to do was just smell her, (the mare). I could only do five minutes of   riding," said Hewitt.   "Then I just got better and better the more I rode."
Robyn Hewitt demonstrates a Sliding stop
"Anyone who is aware of Robyn's story, and the dedication she has, is impressed. Plus the fact that she continues to work as hard as she can, determinded to regain long lost skills. They then understand, why she has become the perfect poster girl to encourage everyone who has mental health issues to not give up. You can get back if you try as hard as she has, and never, never give up." She likely will never become self suficiant, but she works to be the best she can, with her limited abilities," concludes George Hewitt.

The show Sunday promises to be a great after noon for the entire family. The Hewitt Triple "R" Ranch is located on County Road 4, east of Priceville. Show time 1 pm.
"IT was a miracle. She brightened right up. Shw was up at seven o'clock every morning down in the barn taking care of   that horse."

The accident also affected Hewitt's balance and posture, challenging her ability to communicate the signals from the rider to the horse. "I'm still working on it. I'm getting better. It takes a long time for me to get it right." Anyone who meets Robyn is impressed, not only by her additude, but her never ending work to regain some of her skills.

While Hewitt continues practicing, her father works to ready the farm for the big charity horse show coming up.

"All proceeds go to Canadian Mental Health Association, for use in their children programs," claims George Hewitt.
